Module 4: Using the infoshere: taking and organising

June 21, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Great topic! I’m really getting into this and learning so much.. I just hope I can put it all together and make sense of it all.

Tasks

Tools for using the web

My tool kit I guess is pretty small ATM.. I lost most of my programs that I was using when I got some virus attack thingy, and had to take the PC to the repair guy who said he had to wipe it clean and start again. So I’m starting again, slowly building up what I have lost, need and enjoy

Learning from all that I realize that although freeware and shareware are accessible and cost effective, they cannot be replaced so easily when lost. Compared with programs that are bought that have either passwords or hardware that can be re-installed pretty easily. The pay from product option has another bonus in that it normally comes free from bugs and virus’s, where as the alternate versions a lot of the time come blessed with them..

So with that all said and done, my preferred choice in acquiring new software is the most cost effective, ie. FREE.. This is because I believe in freedom and sharing, I do understand however that some things come at a price. So maybe I’m missing out on some good things, but I’m definitely sharing some freedom by going the other way.

I found this site as I wandered through my thinking process’s RE: downloading and freedom

freedom-portal.png

One of the best tools to have I am quickly realizing is the SAVE tool.. However you do it, do it! I have again lost a whole lot of data when my computer just froze, so I had to turn it off, and my blog log was lost… So save SAVE SAVEst..

Back to where I was…

I have downloaded many programs of late, one of them being BookmarkBuddy. The program is just a trial so I am not very interested in using it as i will not be buying it in the future. It is a very simple program similar to the regular features found in my firefox program bookmarks. It is not very visual and attractive to use, two important factors that determine whether I want to use the program.

I also recently downloaded GIMPshop a freeware version of Adobe photoshop. It has most of the functions and similar layout to photoshop, yet its free. It was put together by the GNU project that is bent on sharing information. The program is full of functions and will take a bit of learning to come to terms with it.

Searching the web

We are to download a meta searching program like Copernic or Sherlock. Copernic’s meta-searching properties will only work if you purchase the software, so that’s out for me. And I also read on the discussion board that the program has some critical faults.

The following two guides highlight the differences between search engines, web directories, databases and meatasearchers.

  • Using Web Search Tools
  • Specialised Databases
  • “We’re all informavores now, hunting down and consuming data as our ancestors once sought woolly mammoths and witchetty grubs.”

Rachel Chalmers, “Surf Like A Bushman,” New Scientist

    What to do:

    1. Choose your most commonly used internet search engine and do a search with words of your choosing.

    • record the first hit and number of hits in your learning log

I usually use Google to search for information. I searched for “surfing exploration pacific”, and found 827 000 hits, with the first being MY Galerna sails the south pacific islands-explore the islands

    2. Using copernicus or similar, set it up to search at least three search engines (including one that will search the ‘deep web’) and repeat eactly the same search

    • record the number of hits in your learning log, and compare to your first search. What differences did you notice? Why? Which search, on first glance gave you the most promising results?

I normally use Clusty for metasearching. I found 180 730 hits, with surfing fiji being the first hit. There is a much smaller number of hits with Clusty, and the information is a little bit more directed to what I specifically wanted. Clusty searched from the below:

    These sources have been queried:

    • Ask – Top 68 results retrieved out of 20,800 in 0.996 seconds.
    • Gigablast – Top 50 results retrieved out of 180,730 in 1.816 seconds.
    • MSN – Top 68 results retrieved out of 52,275 in 0.62 seconds.
    • NY Times – No results retrieved in 0.015 seconds.
    • Open Directory – No results retrieved in 0.032 seconds.
    • Shopzilla – No results retrieved in 0.088 seconds.
    • Sponsored Listings – No results retrieved in 0.394 seconds.
    • Wikipedia – No results retrieved in 0.152 seconds.
    • Wisenut – Top 50 results retrieved out of 50 in 0.718 seconds.
    • Yahoo! News – No results retrieved in 0.02 seconds.

It seems this broad range of searching gives a more specific and rounded list of potential sites similar to what I was searching for.

    3. save at least the first 5 hits of both searches.

    Boolean searching Task

Taking the same key words of your last search, think about how you would best search for the following: * the biggest number of hits relating to these key words – I found the biggest number of hits by not using any boolean techniques and just typed in the same search terms.

    * information most relevant to what you ACTUALLY wanted to look for! – My search criteria is too large therefore I would need to add some “NOT” to search for criteria, and maybe some more “AND” to narrow the search down

    * information coming only from university sources – I put “university source” after my search query to highlight the specific term university source. It narrowed down the field to 14. Not sure if this is correct though.

    * Discuss your strategies with the class and record the exact search terms you used in your learning log

    Organising search information

First, choose the best three sources found in the previous task (and be aware all these sources and information can be contributing to your resource bank assignment!)

Using whatever software or tool you think appropriate, record the following information about those sites:

    • URL.
    • author,
    • institution,
    • blurb/ summary / screen shot (this can be a direct copy of an appropriate abstract or introductory paragraph on the site: but make sure you record and reference it as such)

Again, using any useful software you have downloaded, or utilising your existing software, record this information on your computer in the way that you think will be most useful to you in terms of preparing for your third assignment (that is, in terms of how easy you will find it to access, retrieve, understand, contextualise and recall why you saved it – and with what!).

Record this information in your learning log, and also detail how you saved this information, what software you used and why

I have decided to make an area on my World Press Blog dedicated to Internet Sites, named sites . This category will hold all important Internet Sites that are useful in my studies. It is placed there rather than in an exterior bookmark or program because it is the easiest place to access from my blog, while it is centralizing my information sources with my student log and learning. I feel it is better to organize and group information together so in the future you can access and re-ignite previous thoughts/ideas/lessons/sites and put them to use, rather than searching frantically through programs or bookmarks for required information. It also prevents linked information from escaping your perception in moments of forgetfulness.

I have saved the site Net.TUTOR from the Ohio State University, as it contains a very specific collaborative of pertinent information for using the Internet. There are many links to information, programs and ideas that are essential to understanding and using the Internet. This source I feel is the best conglomeration of information to aid me in being an effective Internet researcher, organiser and analyser.

    http://gateway.lib.ohio-state.edu/tutor/index.html

    Net TUTOR

A great site for understanding the simple basics on how to use the Internet. Its a university source so the information is current and has been updated since 1997. Learn to use the Internet properly and you have a better chance of achieving your initial goals. This site gives you the knowledge.

    Evaluating the Web

First, work through the following short, but clear tutorial on evaluating and understanding the information that you find. (You should also see that managing information is closely tied to evaluation: how you store, keep track of and otherwise ‘manage’ your surfing results is very important.)Next, choose your best ’source’ or site from the three you used in the last task, then evaluate it according to the tutorial below.Ohio SU net.TutorBased on this tutorial exercise, decide whether or not you will include the source as part of your ‘resource bank assignment’. (If you decide it is not appropriate, go back to other sources found in the previous task).
In your own words, write an annotation for the source which could communicate to a reader both your ‘judgement’ of the site according to what you have learnt from the tutorial, and also the following information:

    • the reliability and authority of the site / source / article
    • the main ideas or subjects discussed in the article
    • the purpose for which the site was written (this might include any apparent external interest, intellectual motivation or contextual information)

Record your annotation in your learning log.

Compare your final analysis and annotation with the material you saved for the last task, and think about these questions (you may wish to discuss these questions in your group)

    1. in terms of your own future use, which ‘body ‘ of information (ie. the original ’snapshot’ of the site, or your own, annotated, analytical version) would be most useful to refer back to?
    2. In term of external users (i.e. if you included this site as a hyperlink or resource on a website) which body of information would best help them judge if the site was useful or of interest to them?

Record your reflections in your learning log.

I have already unknowingly chosen the Ohio Net TUTOR as a site that I feel deserves future attention. So I have included another site that I found interesting and informative towards my studies.

    Resource
    UC Berkley Library,
Finding Information on the Internet: A tutorial ,
    retrieved 24 June 2007, from

    http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/TeachingLib/Guides/Internet/FindInfo.html

After some net searching using Google I found this very informative site. Its really amazing to know its all already out there waiting for you to find, read and learn. The tutorial came out from a time in Berkley universities life when they realized the astronomical rise in Internet importance and use among students, teachers and the rest of the civilized world. The authority and credibility of the site is highly recommend as it was created as a university reference to help students through the maze known as the Internet.

The main subjects discussed in the site are researching the Internet and obtaining quality information from the Internet effectively.

The simple idea of obtaining reliable, useful information from the www easily and quickly was fading. More disinformation and mega information was and still is flooding the www, than useful credible information. So the university made this site to teach people the basics behind www information.

The tutorial directly relates to Concept 33 Information and attention. The attention economy is fast upon us, and many of us don’t even know it exists. Metadata in many forms is now a normal part of the western world (and the Eastern, Northern and Southern) , and if we don’t understand the information or have the capacity for attention then we will fall by the way side. The Tutorial brings our attention to the information that will give us the opportunity to understand daily metadata, and even contribute if we so wish.

    1. The body of information I found most useful on the site was Evaluating Web Pages: Techniques to Apply & Questions to Ask. This particular body of information is important and I will find it useful in the future as I research further on in my studies. It is a foundation towards effective and efficient Internet use, while giving me the skills to discern a sites credibility and overall value of the information.

    2. The section About this tutorial is a highly recommended starting point for an external user so they can glean an overview of the site and tutorials offered, while providing important information on new updates and who the information providers are. They could then determine if the information inside was useful, credible and user-friendly.
