- Ok well its been a couple of days since I’ve had time to study, and what do I find? A fairly empty blog…What I previously studied and logged the other day for a good half day was all deleted when my GF used the PC and (“UNINTENTIONALLY turned it off, before telling me or closing any programs or saving anything.. So all my work was deleted.. Thank-you so much Natasha! Now I can relearn it all again!… And REMEMBER to save my entries regularly.
- 9th June — I have now since realised the draft copy was saved even though it was not published.. All learning I guess..
2. Introduction:
Your first two tasks for the unit are to:
(1.) Write a message to the discussion board introducing myself —- This was great!@ There are so many interesting knowledgeable people out there and so helpful.
(2.) Send email to web tutor via webct — I received an email reply from Cynthia saying Thanks..
Now I’m set up apparently! Great
3. Module 1:Tasks
Telnet — I orginally went through a bit of hassle finding and working out a telnet prosess..In the end I am using a program called ZOC.. I used telnet to contact Deakin uni and found the Author Bennahum, with two entries..I then attempted to get the information emailed to my curtin address. I have not found any email yet..?
I have now recieved the email on Saturday, it reads:
bennahum You searched for the AUTHOR: bennahum
2 AUTHORS found, with 2 entries; AUTHORS 1-2 are: 1 Bennahum David A 1936 …………………………… 1 entry
2 Bennahum Ninotchka ……………………………… 1 entryI also worked out how to use the windows telnet. Type in telnet in the run menu.. Then o, for open, return. Then the requested telnet address.. Worked sweet..
FTP — I downloaded an FTP program called “SmartFTP” and contacted recall.curtin.edu.au.. There I found a folder called MSC and another sub folder called readme, and ” according to the readme file CAPITILIZATION matters, because the server is running on a unix platform.
Traceroute —
- Traceroute is a utility that records the route (the specific gateway computers at each hop) through the Internet between your computer and a specified destination computer. It also calculates and displays the amount of time each hop took. Traceroute is a handy tool both for understanding where problems are in the Internet network and for getting a detailed sense of the Internet itself. Another utility, ping, is often used prior to using traceroute to see whether a host is present on the network.(Definition brought to you by SearchSMB.com) |
I opened up www.network-tools.com/.. Found a traceroute to the curtin site:
134.7.134.47 is from Australia(AU) in region Oceana

I did a traceroute to my PC and found alot of interesting information. I also looked over http://computerhowstuffworks.com/ to get a bit more of an understanding of traceroutes.
The average time in ms was 245
The IP Number of Curtin is 134.7.134.47
I then did a ping and it came up with

So Im not sure ATM.. I have been looking through the discussions and it seems a common occurance. Not sure of the reason
I then tied the A-Toolbar Ping and traceroute again for webct.curtin.edu.au and worked out how to use it and found the
IP to be: 134.7.34.197. It took 1048596ms, using traceroute and ping.
Much longer than the curtin.edu.au traceroute, which I just tried again and found it to come up in 101ms, with 20 hops. And ping came up to 98ms, and just 5 hops.
Networktools took an Average time over 10 pings: 245 ms for curtin.edu.au, and traceroute of 18 hops and 245 ms
So the A-Tools software seems pretty quick. A-Tools aslo has alot of other software options including telnet, dns, whois etc. I cant work out the telnet though.
